Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had abandoned the family, so she was raised by her mother, grandparents and godparents. When she was a young girl, she battled an obsessive-compulsive disorder that caused anxiety due to word associations. Ford became interested in the profession of acting in her teens and became a member of the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after a short period of days, she concluded that this school wasn't suitable for her. Ford decided to apply for the Central School of Speech and Drama and was able to secure an acceptance on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler who is a character that was recurring in Doctor Who. Ford was able to graduate in 1993, but she already had her TV debut in a 1992 episode of Surgical Spirit. She adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate first appeared on television in the year 1991, appearing in shows such as The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. and London's Burning. In addition to her regular performances in the theatre, Tate also joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate's stand-up humor, which she began adding to her show in 1996, soon gained her admiration.
